In a blog for the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Alicia Ely Yamin, former CESR board member and Senior Fellow at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School, argues that the pandemic is not “a great equalizer” but rather an "x-ray" of the social inequalities within and between our societies. Traditional philanthropic and corporate donor regimes cannot rescue us because they are part of the neoliberal system that has hollowed out fiscal space and compromised rights. Yamin calls for seizing this opportunity and recasting healthcare systems as core social institutions for promoting democratic inclusion for all.
