New guide: How to influence the G20 agenda for Economic Justice

The G20, representing 85% of the global GDP, can shape the global economy, either advancing or obstructing human rights and economic justice. But how can civil society organizations and social movements effectively engage with this influential but often opaque forum?

Our latest publication, “Influencing the G20 Agenda for Economic Justice: A Guide for Change Makers,” provides actionable insights and strategies for advocating within and beyond the G20 system. This guide draws on the collective insights and experiences of CESR and partner organizations, including ABONG (Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations), AFRODAD (African Forum and Network on Debt and Development), the EU Tax Observatory, Gestos, ICRICT (Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation), the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ), INESC (Institute of Socioeconomic Studies), and Oxfam South Africa.

In this guide, you will find:

• An introduction to the G20’s structure, priorities, and influence.

• Effective strategies for CSOs, including participation in engagement groups and organizing grassroots campaigns.

• Lessons learned, such as overcoming challenges like political volatility and lack of continuity in G20 discussions.

• Opportunities to amplify economic justice advocacy, from media engagement to using G20 debates as stepping stones for action in other global forums.

As the South African G20 Presidency begins, this guide serves as an essential resource for activists and organizations striving to align global economic policy with the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability.
