With a budget of US$1.5m and a 14-strong staff team of human rights and economic justice advocates across four continents, we are currently embarked on a multi-year strategy aimed at envisioning a human rights-based economy and catalyzing collective action towards it.
Role Summary
CESR is seeking a dynamic Finance and Administration Manager with a passion for human rights and social justice to enable us to deliver on this goal by facilitating the effective oversight of CESR’s finances and operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, HR, and Operations, the Finance and Administration Manager will be responsible for the effective management of CESR’s financial and administrative systems, including overseeing CESR’s financial and accounting operations, as well as ensuring compliance with applicable legal and regulatory standards and best practices. This position will also be responsible for validating and executing semi-monthly gross to net pay calculations, ensuring the timely and accurate distribution of pay and deductions, in addition to administering the benefit programs to include enrollment, claims resolution, change reporting, and processing consultant invoices for payment. The responsibilities of the position require familiarity with finance and accounting regulations in the US. Specific responsibilities include:
A. Financial Management (40%)

Support with the annual budgeting and monitoring process including assisting with organizational budget development, monitoring progress and changes monthly, managing cash flow as well as keeping senior leadership abreast of the organization’s financial status by generating month end and quarterly financial reports.

Monitoring financial risks and maintain strong internal controls, ensuring adherence to CESR’s financial policies and procedures, periodically reviewing these to ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements

Coordinating the annual audit process and liaising with the external auditor

Preparing tax documents, such as 1099s and ensuring timely filing

Contributing financial information for grant proposals and reports
B. Accounting and Book-keeping (40%)

Maintaining the integrity of CESR’s accounting records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and performing routine bookkeeping tasks

Manage day-to-day accounting processes, including bookkeeping, payroll management, invoicing, managing routine transactional finance tasks, reconciling bank and credit card statements as well as accounting databases, and financial tracking of restricted grants.

Respond to external and internal inquiries and create reports for various stakeholders
C. Human Resources and Administration (20%)

Ensure the effective functioning of CESR’s global virtual workspace including managing organizational administrative (e.g., vendor management) and HR systems (e.g., systematizing maintenance of personnel files).

Process, review, and balance semi-monthly payroll. Ensure payroll transactions are processed correctly for time, earnings, benefits, deductions, taxes, and other items that affect pay and/or company liability. Reconcile to CESR’s general ledger.

Administering benefit programs, advising employees on eligibility for health insurance and 401(k). Respond to payroll and benefits-related inquiries from employees.

Support leadership with researching new benefits plans as well as calculating the financial cost to company information for new plans.

Research and renew policies for insurances including general liability, D&O, etc.
Person profile
The ideal candidate will have:

An undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, or nonprofit management is strongly desired. CPA credentials preferred.

At least five years’ experience in a financial and/or accounting role, preferably in a non-profit.

Close familiarity with US 501c3 operations, nonprofit finance and accounting regulations, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Advanced working knowledge in QuickBooks and spreadsheet software (Excel).

Prior management of annual budgets exceeding $1 million is preferable.

A proven track record of leading the development of progressive and equitable people management strategies and policies

Proven professional integrity and commitment to human rights, equity, and social justice, with experience of modeling these values in organizational practice.

Experience of working in diverse, multicultural, and/or international environments; experience working in virtual environments is highly desirable.
Location and terms
CESR is registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the state of New York, and currently retains an office in New York City. However, since 2020, its international staff team (based in the US, Latin America, South Africa, and India) is currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the responsibilities of the position require familiarity with finance and accounting regulations in the US, the location is flexible, but preferably within the United States.

This is a part time position with estimated weekly engagement of up to 16 hours. The hourly range for this position is between $30-35 per hour if based in New York City, taking into account experience. If the successful candidate is based elsewhere, salary will be adjusted to account for relative cost of living, so as to ensure equity and comparability within the team.
