CESCR Statement on the COVID-19 Pandemic and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights published a statement asserting that in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, States are obligated under international human rights law to devote their maximum available resources to the full realization of all economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to health. As the pandemic and the measures taken to combat it have had a disproportionate negative impact on the most marginalized groups, States must make all efforts to mobilize the necessary resources to combat COVID-19 in the most equitable manner, in order to avoid imposing a further economic burden on these marginalized groups including women, Indigenous communities, precarious workers, and elderly individuals.
