Who we are
CESR is an international non-governmental organization with over 30 years of experience. Our aim is to transform the dominant economic system to ensure a just distribution of resources and power enables current and future generations to live with dignity, in full enjoyment of their economic and social rights. Our work harnesses the power of human rights to inspire fairer and more sustainable economies. We currently work across different programmatic areas, covering climate justice, gender justice, narrative shifting, fiscal justice, rights-based economy, and our flagship decoding injustice work.
What you can expect to do
The position plays a key role in the organization, representing CESR at a wide range of events in national, regional and global processes. The position’s portfolio has a strong focus on economic justice and its relation to international human rights law, and on leading advocacy in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The person will report directly to the Executive Director. The role is ideal for a detailed-oriented, self-guided, value committed and enthusiastic candidate with a track record of working at the intersection of human rights and economic justice.
The primary envisaged tasks for this position include the following (although these are mere examples, and not an exhaustive list of responsibilities):
- Lead research and advocacy for CESR’s fiscal justice program, in particular for its Fiscal Justice in Latin America work.
- Support the development of supporting materials to disseminate and popularize the Principles for Human Rights in Fiscal Policy (“the Principles”).
- Lead liaison with the members of the Steering Committee of the Initiative for Human Rights in Fiscal Policy (“the Initiative”), coordinate regular meetings of the Steering Committee and facilitate discussions and mutual decision-making.
- Support advocacy with and liaison with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
- Support activities for monitoring uptake of the Principles and progress in achieving fiscal justice in the region.
- Represent CESR at a variety of events, including high-level events;
- Conduct advocacy with international human rights mechanisms and in other global and regional processes and platforms, such as the G20, the UN tax convention, or the PT-LAC.
- Lead on the definition of organizational policy positions and research proposals on fiscal justice.
Qualifications, values and skills
Required
- Commitment to the values of CESR, to equity and justice in the workplace and in the wider world.
- At least seven (7) years of increasingly responsible professional experience working on economic issues from a human rights perspective, and strong command of international human rights law.
- A tracked record of work in Latin America, understanding of the CSO dynamics and advocacy experience in the region.
- Sound political judgement.
- Experience working with and building civil society and social movement coalitions, and excellent skills at building and maintaining respectful, trusting, horizontal, and dynamic partnerships.
- Strong command of topics included in the Fiscal Justice agenda, covering issues of debt, budgetary allocations, and tax justice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish, including the ability to communicate complex issues effectively to a wide range of audiences.
- A strong understanding of human rights standards and frameworks and how they relate to the economy and the environment.
- A track record of developing policy proposals and advocacy on human rights and economic or environmental issues with governments and/or multilateral institutions such as the UN, OECD, IMF, World Bank, or other multilateral development banks.
- Experience managing and building teams, bringing a care and equity lens and mentoring junior staff in professional development.
- Strong project and management experience, close attention to detail, and ability to juggle several different projects.
- Ability to write and research independently, and to produce high-quality research outputs in short periods of time.
- Fluency in English and Spanish.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in law, political science, development, human rights or similar field (or an exceptionally strong track record of work which shows equivalent expertise);
- A strong feminist perspective and track record of feminist analysis, including of the impact of colonial legacies on global financial architecture;
- Expertise in economics, especially heterodox or feminist economics;
- Fundraising experience;
- Solid research experience, ideally in more than one discipline including law, economics, and/or political sciences.
- Ability to write a variety of documents including briefs, submissions to human rights mechanisms, articles and book chapters, and other documents that apply CESR’s methodologies to new areas of work.
- Persons in and/or from Latin America will be given preference for the role.
What we offer
This position is envisioned as a part-time role. While the role is fully remote, the successful candidate will be expected to work hours that enable coordination with our team members across the Americas, Africa, and Europe.
The salary offered will depend on location and experience, but would range between $34,000 and $45,000 for a full time position.
