SIDE EVENT

Friday, 13 December 2013, 1:15-2:30 PM

United Nations Headquarters, Trusteeship Council Chamber

The sixth session of the Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals is currently taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York. At this session the OWG, which is tasked with designing a proposal for the future sustainable development goals, will examine the role human rights should play in the new framework.

With global civil society clamouring for human rights to be at the very heart of post-2015 global deveopment, CESR and its partners are organizing a side event entitled "Human Rights at the Core of Sustainable and Just Development" which will be held on Friday, 13 December 2013, from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.

Human rights have surged to the forefront of the debate about what will succeed the Millennium Development Goals in 2015. Yet, UN member states are just beginning to articulate the concrete implications of embedding human rights into the set of goals, targets, and indicators as well as the accountability and financing systems of the post-2015 sustainable development framework.

In this context, human rights, development and environmental practitioners will discuss the very practical, baseline implications of anchoring the post-2015 SDG framework in existing human rights norms throughout the three dimensions of sustainable development—social, economic, environmental—and
the importance of governance and accountability in this regard.
