"Human Rights and Development: Towards Realizing the Right to Development" is being held on 26 October 2009, from 1:25pm-2;45pm in CR E at the UN Headquarters in New York.
A parallel event to the UN General Assembly's 64th session, it intends to raise awareness about the implicationsand potential of human rights, including the right to development, for theFinancing for Development follow up process.
The Financing for DevelopmentConference held in 2002 produced the Monterrey Consensus, which broughttogether all development actors in an inclusive and multi-stakeholder process, under the auspices of the United Nations, with the purpose of holisticallyaddressing and mobilizing all available sources of finance for development.
The Doha Review Conference, heldin 2008, reaffirmed the global partnership for sustainable development that hadbeen launched in Monterrey. It recognized the importance of respect for allhuman rights, including the right to development, in such endeavor. Indeed, ithas been well-accepted, for a long time, that human rights not only provideshared values but also define obligations of the States and the internationalcommunity in serving the cause of development.
What is the significance of the humanrights and right to development agenda for the Financing for Developmentprocess and what value does it add? What is the significance of the Financingfor Development process for the human rights agenda, especially taking intoaccount the FFD concept of a ???global compact??? of development? How can allstakeholders, concretely through the FFD follow up process, promote a moreconcrete integration of human rights in financing for development?
