U.S. MEDIA TARGET IRAQ: What's the truth about sanctions, war & international law?

In May 2002, FAIR hosted this talk by Roger Normand, CESR co-founder.

A talk by Roger Normand,

Center for Economic & Social Rights

Presented by FAIR

Thursday, May 23, 6:30 PM

Housing Works Used Book Café

126 Crosby St (between Prince and Houston), New York

Free and Open to the Public

Most U.S. media have echoed the Bush administration in presenting military action against Iraq as the logical next step in the "war on terror." But how accurate are the charges that Iraq is a major player in international terrorism, or that it harbors a vast secret arsenal? And would a new U.S. attack be legal?

Basic questions like this tend to get lost in media speculation about the best way to "get Saddam," as do the ugly realities of the devastation caused by the ongoing U.S. bombing and the sanctions which have contributed to the deaths of well over half a million children.

Please join FAIR for a talk by Roger Normand as we try to decode the media spin and discuss what concerned people can do at this crucial time.

Roger Normand is co-founder and director of the Center for Economic and Social Rights, an activist group challenging economic injustice from a framework of international human rights law. He organized Harvard University's Study Team missions to Iraq, the first independent investigations of the devastating effects of war and sanctions on the civilian population.

This is the latest of FAIR's monthly media talks at Housing Works. Past topics have included media coverage of AIDS drugs and Africa, the "drug war" in Colombia, the Battle of Seattle, biotech, the Zapatistas, civil liberties post-9/11, and more. All talks are free and open to the public.
