Sergio Chaparro, Human Rights in Economic Policy Program Officer, spoke on International Television News Network France 24 about the G20's Jubilee Debt Campain—an agreement by governments of leading economies to suspend debt payments owed to them by some of the world's poorest countries.
Chaparro said that although the agreement was a welcome move, it was only a postoponement that will not alleviate longterm debt burdens. He said private and public creditors must go much further in their relief policies and that civil society organizations are demanding debt restructuring or permanent cancellation to enable low- and middle- income countries to deal with the COVID-19 crisis.
