Secretary of State Madeleine Albright recently insisted that sanctions will not be lifted until Saddam Hussein is removed from power, while at the same time declaring that the US military will never commit the ground forces necessary to accomplish this. With Hussein and his inner circle more firmly in control than ever, and the Iraqi people crippled by seven years of devastating sanctions, the US position effectively means sanctions without end.
